My thoughts

Oh my, this was good. It was a brilliant exercise in suspense with plenty of twists and turns along the way. Everything about it, from the setting (an opulent yet sinister building in dark, mysterious Paris) to the list of suspects and potential victims, was superbly constructed. From the very first page it grabs you and throws you right into the action. You know something terrible has happened, someone has met a very grisly end but the circumstances are not clear. It is so cinematic in it’s telling that I could effortlessly see it happening before me. My mind was tricked into thinking I was watching events unfold rather than reading them. No surprise at all that the film adaptation rights have been snapped up on this one. Done well it could be rather wonderful. The book has been described at a modern day ‘Agatha Christie’. Being a big fan of Agatha’s I feel comfortable with that comparison. I wonder, if done well, the film will have the potential for a modern Hitchcock? The quality of novel certainly has the potential of it and I had the same feeling I have watching his films when I was reading this. That constant desire, yet fear, to find out what happens next. It’s an exciting prospect. I love when a book inspires others to take it’s creative journey further.

So do I recommend this book? Absolutely. It’s one of those books that made me want to re read it again to see if I could pick up on all the clues. I think I did get some along the way. I think The Paris Apartment might just be one of the biggest books of the year. I am still thinking of it days after finishing and I just adore it when a story lingers, whispering into the corners of your mind long after you’ve turned the final page.
